You’re thinking of teaching a child to read. What a great idea! Now all you need is exactly the right blueprint. This easy-to-follow book is written with two people in mind; you, and the child you’re thinking of teaching. Mother and children’s reading specialist Tracey Wood gives you all the down-to-earth, honest information you need to give a child a happy, solid start with reading.

Teaching Kids to Read For Dummies is for parents of young children who want to give their kids a head start by teaching them to read before they enter school or to supplement their children’s school instruction, as well as teachers and caregivers of young children. Filled with hands-on activities that progress a child from sounds to words to sentences to books, this friendly guide shows you how to:

    * Prepare a child to read
* Sharpen his listening skills
* Correct her errors graciously
* Choose the right books
* Have kids read out loud
* Find help if you need it

Whether the child you want to teach is two or twelve; fast paced or steady; an absolute beginner or someone who’s begun but could use a little help, this empathetic book shows you how to adapt the simple, fun activities to your child’s individual needs. You’ll see how to make activities age appropriate, how to add more challenge or support, and how to make gender allowances if that’s relevant.

Plus, you’ll discover how to:

    * Lay the foundation for good reading skills
* Tell the difference between a reading delay and a reading problem
* Help your child build words from letters and sounds, advance to short and long vowel words, and conquer syllables and silent letters
* Select entertaining workbooks, recycle them, and make up your own reading activities
* Get your child ready for sentences
* Keep your child reading — with others or on his own

Complete with lists of word families, phonics rules, and reading resources, Teaching Kids to Read For Dummies will help you make learning fun for your child as he or she develops this critical skill!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. What would it require for a person to live all the commandments of the Bible for an entire year? That is the question that animates this hilarious, quixotic, thought-provoking memoir from Jacobs (The Know-It-All). He didn’t just keep the Bible’s better-known moral laws (being honest, tithing to charity and trying to curb his lust), but also the obscure and unfathomable ones: not mixing wool with linen in his clothing; calling the days of the week by their ordinal numbers to avoid voicing the names of pagan gods; trying his hand at a 10-string harp; growing a ZZ Top beard; eating crickets; and paying the babysitter in cash at the end of each work day. (He considered some rules, such as killing magicians, too legally questionable to uphold.) In his attempts at living the Bible to the letter, Jacobs hits the road in highly entertaining fashion to meet other literalists, including Samaritans in Israel, snake handlers in Appalachia, Amish in Lancaster County, Pa., and biblical creationists in Kentucky. Throughout his journey, Jacobs comes across as a generous and thoughtful (and, yes, slightly neurotic) participant observer, lacing his story with absurdly funny cultural commentary as well as nuanced insights into the impossible task of biblical literalism. (Oct.)

From Library Journal
Iovine follows up her successful The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy (Pocket, 1995) with this breezy, irreverent guide to the first year of motherhood. She covers everything from labor (when you feel “like you’ve swallowed a bucking bronco”) to “poo-poo that smells like roses” to nursing, sleeping (or not), postpartum depression, and more. The idea here is to provide insider information (girlfriends share and share alike, right?), but the tone is more often flippant than confidential. There’s not much new material that is not already found in classics like Arlene Eisenberg’s What To Expect the First Year (Workman, 1988), and nervous first-timers may not respond well to Iovine’s approach. Not a priority purchase.?Barbara Hoffert, “Library Journal”

From Publishers Weekly
The world is a kinder, gentler place for pregnant women, or so discovers Jane Taylor, the heroine of Baratz-Logsted’s debut novel, upon learning that she’s expecting. So when her pregnancy turns out to be a false alarm, Jane impulsively decides to keep up the ruse. She invents details about her OB-GYN and fakes a growing stomach, among other increasingly inventive tricks. Jane is single (her live-in boyfriend didn’t appreciate her deception), almost 30, an editor and British. Sound familiar? Baratz-Logsted is refreshingly self-conscious about following the chick-lit trend. As Jane laments, “Sometimes it felt as though you could no longer turn around in a bookshop or at an editorial meeting without being confronted with yet another pink-covered book whose pages told about the wacky adventures of yet another 20-something Londoner who labored in publishing.” Jane’s own adventures are more daring than many of her fellow single-female heroines, and Baratz-Logsted’s premise is hilarious and original. Soon Jane’s pregnancy threatens to ruin a budding romance and a project at work. She wishes she could come clean, but she’s been offered a book contract about her farce by a colleague who catches her in the act. Jane doesn’t start out as the most likable of characters, but she changes so much over the course of the novel, and is so charmingly audacious, that readers will be rooting for her-and wondering what she’ll do at the end of the nine months.

From Publishers Weekly
Yet another endearingly flawed, contemporary London career girl comes down the pike in this latest novel by British writer Green (Jemima J). Libby Mason, 27, enjoys her fashionable career in PR, but is determined to marry a rich, “gorgeous” man who will support her in sumptuous style and allow her to join the class of ladies who lunch. Her previous relationships have proven unsatisfactory on all fronts, but then she meets Nick, who happens to be “gorgeous,” smart, funny, sensitive and unparalleled in the sack, but unfortunately also a struggling writer who lives in a “grotty” (but clean) bedsit. Libby decides to have fun in bed with Nick and not fall in love, because he’s not rich and she doesn’t like his left-wing, blue-collar friends. They do have lots of great sex, until Nick breaks up with Libby because he is too attracted to her and isn’t ready for a relationship. Libby turns for comfort to her best friend, Jules, who is happily married to the “gorgeous” Jamie. On a girl’s night on the town, Libby meets well-known financier Ed McMahon, who is very rich and very eligible, but not “gorgeous” he is older, pompous, boring and the worst lay she has ever had, but when he proposes Libby accepts, as she sees her dream of becoming the idle rich at last coming true. Despite an annoying overuse of the word “gorgeous,” Libby Mason manages to garner reader sympathy and even a cheer or two. There are no surprises here and a few loose ends dangle (allusions to Nick’s hidden upper-class roots are never explained), but Green has a charming way with dialogue and sex scenes, making this a cheerful summer read. 3-city author tour.
