HOW TO Crochet a Rope Basket – an Actual Tutorial with Pictures in English!

Good grief! I have been looking for a how to crochet a rope basket tutorial for ages. You see tons of them on Pinterest, but when you start clicking the images the links are dead or lead to a virus or lead to something that isn’t in English or leads to images with no directions – That’s It! I’m making my own Tutorial on Crocheting a Rope Basket.

1. You need rope!
2. Yarn. I used dish rag yarn – Lily Sugar and Cream. You can get it at Wally World
3. Crochet hook. US H8 – or whatever the yarn tells you to use, use that!
4. LED String Lights are optional, but Awesome!

Row: (row images at the bottom)
1. magic circle with 8 sc
2. Sc 1, ch 1 around the rope in each of the 8 magic circle sc
3. In each ch space 2 sc, ch 1
4. In each ch space 2 sc, in between each sc make 1 sc.
5. sc, ch 1 in each space
6. 2 sc in each space
7. Sc in each space
8 – the height you want. Repeat row 7 – but first read below or you’ll end up with a rope ball!

You’re going to single crochet in each space around and around until you get the height you want, but you’re not going to do tight single crochets. You’re going to do each single crochet so it stands up straight, but is not loose.

Here is where you start rounding the bowl and adding the lights.

If you add the lights, use Cymas LED String Lights at least for your first project. The reason is they are hard to break – so you won’t end up with a basket and lights that don’t work.

When starting the lights start further down the black casing than I did. I should have started 4 or 5 crochets down the black casing. Instead I ended up going back and using some yarn to tack the black casing to the basket to make sure the lights didn’t break.

Work around and around until it is the height you want or you run out of lights. I added handles, but it’s not necessary.
If the basket starts looking like a ball, take our a few rows and add a single crochet. Or if the basket isn’t going up straight fast enough for you reduce a stitch.

Here are the images of the bottom of the basket:

To end. Cut your rope and either burn the end or tape the rope before cutting.
Once you get to the end do a few single crochets around the end tucking it below the top of the basket. It curves down a bit, but looks fines.

Next I will do a tutorial of the oval basket. Keep checking back.
