Simple Crochet Backpack Pattern – How to Crochet a Backpack

Simple Crochet Backpack Pattern

This is my most requested pattern. Typically I quickly hand write it for whomever, but this week I am taking the time to type it out and make it available for everyone.

This is such a simple pattern that any newbie can easily do it.

Please remember I learned to crochet from a little old lady who didn’t know how to read crochet patterns, she looked at the pictures and that is how she taught me. If you get stuck it’s probably my fault, just leave me a message in the comments.

Also if you find an error and you know how to correct it, please leave the correction in the comments and I’ll correct the pattern.

ch = chain
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
st = do whatever in the top of the double crochet from the row below.

ch 2 always counts as 1 dc.
ch 2 NEVER means to ch 2 between dc

Start with a magic ring or a ring of some kind.

Personally I use an open slip knot and crochet around it. Whatever you use is fine.

Base
Row 1: ch 2, 11 dc within the ring.
Slip stitch into the top of the ch 2 to complete row.

Row 2: ch 2, 1 dc in same space.
2 dc in each dc from the row below.
Slip stitch into the top of the ch 2 to complete.

Row 3: ch 2, 1 dc in same space.
In next space 1 dc, in next pace 2 dc, continue around
Slip stitch in top of the ch 2 to complete.

Row 4 – 6: ch 2, 1 dc in same space
1 dc in next 2 spaces, 2 dc in next space around.
Slip stitch in top of the ch 2 to complete.

Row 8 – 30: ch 2, 1 dc in each st around
Slip stitch in the top of the ch 2 to complete each row.

Row 14: change color if desired. Continue with directions from Row 8.

Top
Row 31: from the slip stitch, ch 2, 1 dc in same space.
ch 1, skip next st, 1 dc each in the next 2 dc, continue around
Slip stitch in the top of the ch 2
(Don’t worry if it doesn’t end exactly right, just fake it)

Row 32 & 33: ch 1 (counts as first hdc)
1 hdc in each st around
slip stitch into ch 1 to complete rows.
(do not ch between hdc)
Fasten off.

Straps
Because every person is a different size you can change the length of the straps.

Chain about 8 feet, hdc in second ch from hook and in each st all the way back.
Fasten off.

Weave the strap through the top of the backpack.

Note: it is possible that you could end up with one to many loops to thread the strap, just skip the last one. It happens – don’t sweat it, no one will ever notice.

Even out the straps. Feed the very ends of the straps through row 8 (or row 14 depending on the look you want)

Tie the straps together inside the backpack adjusting for the wearers size.
