Stephanie here – again! G has been safely deposited at school, and she has a couple of more days before classes start, so she is unpacking and getting everything ready. She is so happy to be back with her roommates and friends and starting her second year of college.
Now I go into planning mode! I like to send her a care package every month, and her sister, dad and I did pretty well with it last year. Each box has a theme:
October – Halloween
November – Thanksgiving
December – Christmas and finals
February – Valentine’s Day
March – St. Patrick’s Day and winter
April – Easter
May – Finals
Last year I sent two in December – one was Christmas-themed and the other consisted entirely of emergency chocolate and candy for finals’ study sessions. I skipped January because she went back to school in the middle of the month, but loaded February with extra Valentine’s Day treats. It is usually easy to find little dollar store items for each holiday to throw in for fun. Each month I like to include magazines, her favorite candy, and snacks like popcorn and crackers. Of course, I always include the toiletries and hygiene items I know that she will need to refill, like Schick® Hydro Silk® Razor replacement cartridges, toothpaste, makeup remover, and dental floss. And hair elastics. We buy them in bulk and she can NEVER find them again once she has worn them!
I have a list of all of G’s favorites, from perfume and candy to nail polish remover and hand lotion. I grab things on sale whenever I can, and throw small itemsminto her care package. She loves receiving them, and I have a lot of fun putting them together. I have found a lot of great ideas on Pinterest too – of course! It might seem counterproductive, mailing out toiletries and other things that she can buy for herself, but without a car it isn’t always easy for her to shop, and when I drive the two hours to visit her, I want to spend time with her and not be out shopping. And besides, who wouldn’t love to receive a goodie-filled box in the mail?
