Wrongly flashed chimneys lead to lots of decaying roof framing members and sheathing. Chimneys require being correctly counter flashed and step-flashed so that water cannot flow down the surface of the chimney and into the attic. You cannot depend on roof cement or caulk to keep the water out. If you are doubtful that your flashing is sloppy, creep into the attic after a hefty rain.
