Mini Scarf Pattern
I started making these mini scarves after seeing them on a friends profile. She gave me directions, but they didn’t work for the Harry Potter scarf. Her directions were ‘long ways’ as kids say, I needed to crochet the scarf …. um ‘short ways’ to get the stripes in there.
If you’re a master crocheter you probably will be annoyed by my detailed instructions of this mini scarf pattern so your directions are first. If you’re not a master of crochet just skip that part and move on to the more detailed directions.
HOOK: H/8 5.00MM
Master Crocheter:
The scarf is 18 HDC by 33 inches long or fit to your neck.
Add 3 button holes usually around the third to the last row.
Be creative!
Beginner / Intermediate:
I start the mini scarf pattern with 19 chains.
Starting at the 3rd chain from the hook: half double crochet in that chain and one half double crochet in each of the next 17 chains.
Counting the first 2 chains as the first half double crochet, you should have a count of 18.
If you’re a beginner, that doesn’t make any sense. If you know the basics of crochet that probably makes sense, but let me show you a picture anyway.

Chain one and turn.
The one chain counts as the first half double crochet. Yes, I know you didn’t just do a half double crochet yet, but crocheters for generations have been writing patterns this way so that’s the way we put it.
In crocheting there are the top V’s and the Side V’s. If you look at your crocheting you’ll see what I mean. Those V’s have a Technical Crochet term, but I learned to crochet from an chain smoking old woman who looked at the pictures in the pattern books and instantly knew exactly how to do it. She couldn’t “read crochet” so she adapted and that’s how she taught everyone. Sorry I don’t know the technical term for the V’s
We’re working with the SIDE V’s
Going under the SIDE V’s from here on, half double crochet in the next 17 half double crochets.
Counting the chain you did before you turned, that gives you 18 – And you’re going to repeat that process for the next 32 inches or until it fits around your neck and folds almost completely over first part of your scarf.
Button Holes
Get creative with your button holes. Since this is the end of the scarf it’s no big deal if you have to take out a row or 2.
When you get to the area where you want the buttons:
Chain 1 which counts as the first half double crochet, then half double crochet in the next 3 half double crochets (Which makes 4 half double crochet).
Chain 2, skip the next half double crochet, half double crochet in the next 4 half double crochets.
Chain 2, skip the next half double crochet, half double crochet in the next 4 half double crochets.
Chain 2, skip the next half double crochet, half double crochet in the next 4 half double crochets and you should be at the end of the row.
(The button holes can also be done with single crochet, but you have to workout the button size and the hole size. This can be difficult for beginners, so stick with the button hole instructions above for the first scarf and once you’ve got it, get creative.)
Turn and Chain 1.
Half double crochet in each half double crochet and once in the button spaces all the way across. Again you should end up with 18 half double crochet.
Depending on the length you need to fully overlap the end, you may want to do another row of half double crochet or not. Again, be creative!
Fasten off.
